Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich
Located in Kunstareal - Munich's art district - Pinakothek der Moderne is a must for every art and design lover.
Kunstareal München is embedded in the vibrant Maxvorstadt district between Königsplatz and Theresienstrasse. With its museums spanning more than 5000 years of cultural history and colleges it is one of Europe’s most important cultural hubs.
Inside Stephan Braunfels' 2002 building Pinakothek der Moderne unites four museums under one roof; one of Europe's largest collections for modern and contemporary art, architecture and design.
Starting point for all museums is the large rotunda with its stately 23 meter sky dome. From here visitors can dive into the different exhibitions.
Two exhibitions that impressed me:
- The Design Museum: Werner Aisslinger's House of Wonders
- Aisslinger focus on materials and the future of living and working is displayed with an installation on micro-farming and the concept of Loftcube. The Loftcube project is minimal architecture; a transportable house for Nomadic people (39sqm) with all the functions you need. The concept is you can live wherever you want: seaside, nature, on rooftops. It is non-permanent architecture. I am in love with the idea.
- Architekturmuseum: Francis Kéré. Radically Simple
- The Berlin-based architect Francis Kéré is one of the most important advocates of socially-engaged architecture. In his home country Burkina Faso he integrates local materials and the community and herewith places a heavy emphasis on the social and environmental integration of his projects.
