This January three years of construction on Alter Markt, the historic center of Potsdam, have come to an end for the opening of Museum Barberini. The museum's opening exhibitions are Impressionism: The Art of Landscape, and Modern Art Classics: Liebermann, Munch, Nolde, Kandinsky to introduce over 170 works in the collection.
Impressionism: The Art of Landscape
Think of Claude Monet's Water Lillies, Alfred Sisley's Meadow at Veneux-Nadon - landscape paintings of the sea, gardens, and reflections on water. All masterpieces come from International museums and private collections. All paintings have a beautiful stage against the bold colored walls in dark blues, bold purples and lush greens.
Modern Art Classics: Liebermann, Munch, Nolde, Kandinsky
Beginning in the 1890s and spanning 100 years this exhibition features 60 paintings sculptures which are considered classics of modern art. Liebermann, Munch, Nolde and Kandinsky are among the artists featured. I was especially impressed by Joan Mitchell's art.
It is advisable to book tickets in advance if you want instant access. If you have time, buy your ticket and go for a walk through Potsdam, everything is within walking distance. Also download the app and bring your headphones for a free audio tour through the exhibition.
Opening exhibition (Jan. 23 – May 28, 2017). The next exhibition "From Hopper to Rothko: America's Road to Modern Art" will open on June 17, 2017.
